Project Sponsorship

Bata and Sunrise

Many Malaysians would remember the “WWF van” or Mobile Education Unit (MEU), which brought with it environmental education (EE) at its most fun and interactive in a brightly painted van.

Established and funded by Bata Malaysia from 1977 to 2005, and supported by Sunrise Berhad in 2005, the MEU has made EE come alive for more than 1 million students. Since its first day on the road, the MEU has helped to nurture a new generation of environmentally aware Malaysians. Renamed “Environment & You” in 2006, this education programme now aims to infuse EE into the National Curriculum.

Gamuda Berhad

Gamuda Berhad generously donated funds to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Buloh, under a WWF-Malaysia “School Greening Programme” where corporate sponsors had the opportunity to “adopt” a school for one year.

Through this project, Gamuda Berhad helped the school’s teachers and students learn more about nature conservation and the importance of embracing environmentally-friendly practices.

Honda

“Honda is a committed supporter of environmental conservation efforts globally in line with our aim to create a better world. In Malaysia, Honda is proud to continue this heritage by initiating the "Rhino Rescue" project, an effort by WWF-Malaysia and Honda Malaysia, aimed at protecting Sumatran rhinos. Honda Malaysia is the first, and only, corporation dedicated to sponsoring a long term project to save the Sumatran rhino.”

“In living up to Honda's "Challenging Spirit" culture which drives the company and our employees to realise dreams, Honda Malaysia aims to give our best in working with WWF-Malaysia on this 5-year project to save our Sumatran rhinos,” Mr. Yasuhide Mizuno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

A striking example of Honda’s “Challenging Spirit” culture - which drives the company and its employees to realise dreams - is their support of efforts to save the highly endangered Sumatran rhino estimated to be less than 300 left in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra.

In early 2006, Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd pledged a contribution of RM 5 million to WWF-Malaysia under a 5-year project called “Rhino Rescue” to enhance Sumatran rhino protection efforts in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

Boh Plantations

“We recognise that WWF-Malaysia has a distinguished history and passion for protecting orang-utans, an endangered species, and have found this partnership to be mutually beneficial,” Mr. Chen Chaw Chang, Senior Marketing Manager, BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd

The orang-utan - a popular symbol of Malaysia’s rich natural heritage - is threatened by forests being cleared for agriculture, resulting in patches of protected forest being separated by degraded secondary forest and plantations.

To help conserve the orang-utan, HABITAT or the Rehabilitation of Orang-utan’s Habitat project began in 2003 to improve orang-utan habitat and generate greater food sources for them in Sabah’s Lower Kinabatangan region. Replanting forest trees in degraded areas will also enrich “wildlife corridors” that reconnect gaps in the forest, giving orang-utans and other animals greater mobility to feed, hunt or find mates over a wider area.

With generous support from BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd since 2005, 4680 trees were replanted, restoring an area measuring about 5 hectares by July 2006. BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd, Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd and RAPID KL also helped launch WWF-Malaysia’s first community service message on an LRT train in August 2005. Covered with pictures and information about orang-utans, the train educates thousands of commuters every day on the importance of orang-utan conservation.

It is hoped that through these efforts, future generations will have the privilege of seeing the “Man of the Forest” in its natural habitat.

HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad

“HSBC has always supported the community in which we operate. Projects are selected based on its impact on, and benefit for, the community. 'Engaging People in Sustainability' at Fraser's Hill was initiated as its rivers acted as an important source of water to the Klang Valley and Pahang. Conserving Fraser's Hill would mean safeguarding not only its rich biodiversity and ecological functions but also its water resources for the benefit of all Malaysians. 'Living Together in Harmony' is not only to support the endangered Malayan tiger but to ensure that the community also benefits, whether it is from an economic standpoint or in raised awareness and education of conservation issues,” Dato’ Zarir J Cama, Deputy Chairman and CEO, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad.

HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad shows that they really are “The World’s Local Bank” through their commitment to three projects that involve mobilising local communities:

“Engaging People in Sustainability” at Fraser’s Hill aims to achieve a greener Fraser’s Hill through participation of the local community with guidance from WWF-Malaysia and support from HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. To date, local community interest group, Fraser’s Hill Environmentally Sustainable Heritage (FRESH) has been formed and Bishop’s Trail has been upgraded.

Living Together In Harmony aims to conserve Malayan tigers by protecting their habitat, developing wildlife-friendly logging guidelines and reducing
human-tiger conflict through education. Since January 2005, 2,485 schoolchildren in Jeli have learnt how local communities can avoid tiger attacks and help protect the animal. In July 2006, www.tigersalive.com was launched to teach children about tigers and to let them communicate with peers worldwide. A tiger conservation themed activity book, “The Adventures of Si Belang,” was also produced.

Investing in the Future is a collaborative effort by the bank, WWF-Malaysia and the Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society (SWCS) to maintain the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre. This unique sanctuary for birds and other wetland inhabitants lies in the heart of the bustling city and is managed by the newly formed SWCS which WWF-Malaysia helped to establish.

HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad has donated generous funds to enhance environmental education for 10,000 schoolchildren. It will also focus on community empowerment through participation in nature protection efforts, which includes HSBC staff raising funds for sustaining wetlands conservation.

Nokia

“Nokia places great importance on the environment and sees its work with WWF-Malaysia as part of its role in the community within which it exists to ensure that we act responsibly. Our main objective with this involvement with WWF is to increase awareness about the threats to the environment and help Nokia employees and customers realise the difference they can make if they understand the situation with the environment. With Nokia’s sponsorship of the Ma'Daerah project, we hope to work together with WWF-Malaysia and relevant authorities to create community awareness on turtle conservation,” Geraldine Wong, Marketing Manager, Nokia.

Every year, hawksbills and green turtles, swim thousands of miles to lay their eggs on Terengganu’s beaches. Excessive coastal development, marine habitat destruction, pollution and turtle mortalities from being entangled in fishing gear threaten their existence.

Hope lies within the Paka-Kertih rookery in Kemaman, Terengganu. The Ma’Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre is the focal point of environmental awareness programmes for the local community. Initiated and managed by WWF-Malaysia, with generous financial support from BP since 1999 and Nokia since 2005, the programme aims to generate community participation in conservation and sustainable protection of turtles.

Nestlé

“Nestlé Malaysia's involvement with WWF-Malaysia dates back many years ago, with consumer education on the conservation of wildlife through its MILKMAID brands. Over the years, the Nestlé-WWF partnership has developed with a common objective to conserve the environment. Our involvement in the Setiu Wetlands Project is very much in line with our corporate social responsibility commitment towards supporting sustainable livelihoods and improving the quality of lives of the less privileged communities,” Mr. Sullivan O’ Carroll, Managing Director, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad.

Few Malaysians have heard of the Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu, that is rich in natural resources and in need of conservation. Vital for the fisheries sector, the wetlands are also home to Malaysia’s largest breeding population of the critically endangered Painted terrapins and River terrapins. Moreover, the Setiu Wetlands act as a natural filter of pollutants and provide flood control for the area.

Nestlé funded a survey of the socio-economic needs and current condition of communities in key Setiu villages during early 2006 to identify the capacity building needs of the local communities, particularly the women of Setiu. As mothers and co-income earners, they play an important role in the area’s long-term sustainable development.

Public Bank

Malacca is home to one of the largest nesting populations of hawksbill turtles in Peninsular Malaysia. These turtles are critically endangered partly due to the commercial trade of their shells and widespread poaching, despite regulated egg collection.

In 2005, Public Bank began supporting WWF-Malaysia’s work with the Department of Fisheries to motivate local villagers in turtle conservation and raise awareness about turtle conservation in schools along the coastal areas with nesting beaches. Educational materials were also produced and distributed to schools and local communities.

The funds enabled a socio-economic and perception survey - undertaken in mid-2006 - to gain a deeper understanding of the livelihood dependence of fishermen, villagers and chalet operators on marine turtles and engage them in conservation efforts.

YTL

WWF-Malaysia will strengthen its tiger conservation efforts, specifically to resolve the human-tiger conflict in Jeli District, Kelantan with the help of YTL Corporation's award of USD100,000 (RM340,000).

Factors such as rapid development and unsustainable logging have caused tigers and humans to involuntarily come into contact with each other, causing conflict. The increase of human-tiger conflict has costed human lives and removal of tigers from the wild. WWF-Malaysia is working closely with local authorities and villagers to provide extensive education on conserving the tiger habitat and adopt better management practices in their farming activities.

The YTL Grants are part of YTL’s efforts and long-term commitment to environmental protection following their highly successful Climate Change Week in March 2007. Climate Change Week was a weeklong initiative to raise awareness of environmental consciousness among Malaysians regarding climate change and global warming.

Event Sponsorship

Big Tree and RAPID KL

“WWF-Malaysia is a reputable organisation when it comes to wildlife conservation & protection in Malaysia. It has contributed immensely to creating awareness among Malaysians in this area. Big Tree also has a corporate community programme and we are proud to be given the opportunity to partner WWF in this particular project. We thought the idea of converting the entire LRT train into an orang-utan “sanctuary” would be a really impactful way to raise even greater awareness of the good work undertaken by WWF-Malaysia among the approximately 5 million Putra Line LRT commuters monthly,” Encik Mohammad Azlan Abdullah, Director of Operations, Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd.

To educate the public on the importance of orang-utan conservation, WWF-Malaysia launched its first community service message LRT train in August 2005. Made possible with the support of BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd, Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd and RAPID KL, the train - covered with pictures and information about orang-utans - transports thousands of commuters every day. This made the “orang-utan” train, which ran for a year, an effective tool in building public awareness.
