Prime Minister endorses global effort: WWF’s Earth Hour
Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi indicated his support and endorsement of Malaysia’s participation in Earth Hour 2009. To date, 74 cities in 62 countries have committed to switch off for WWF’s Earth Hour in 2009. The campaign, which hopes to reach out to more than one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world, asks individuals, businesses and governments to switch off lights for just one hour on Saturday, 28 March 2009 at 8:30pm to create a platform of support for action on climate change. » Read more

WWF-Malaysia refers to the Terengganu Menteri Besar’s reply on logging. In particular, WWF-Malaysia would like to address the comments made by the MB with regard to the submerging of forests for dam purposes and the existence of ‘‘plenty of wildlife”. Proposed logging in catchment forest threatens rhinos, tigers
Petaling Jaya – A Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA) has revealed that the Terengganu state government has proposed to extract all commercially valuable timber in 12,630ha of forest adjacent to the 6,130ha of forest reserve currently being cleared for the construction of two hydropower dams. » Read more

Stronger enforcement in proposed Tun Mustapha Park
Sixteen local fishermen and community members from Kudat were appointed as Honorary Wildlife Wardens for the proposed Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) in Kudat during a course conducted by the Sabah Wildlife Department. More Malaysian Mammals Seeing Red
Marine mammals such as the Irawaddy dolphin, and land mammals such as the Malayan sun bear, were confirmed to be closer to extinction according to the recent release of the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Red List ranks species according to their population status and threat levels, which have increased for many species as a result of habitat loss and degradation, over-exploitation, pollutants and climate change. » Read more
